NADAUD QUARTET. A chamber music organization founded in Paris by Edouard Nadaud, a well-known soloist and teacher at the Paris Conservatory.
NEW YORK STRING QUARTET. Composed of Ottokar Cadek, Jaroslav Siskovsky, Ludvik Schwab and Bedrich Vaska. It was founded by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pulitzer in 1919 with the object of creating a permanent organization for the advancement of chamber music. Three years of practice preceded the first really public appearance of this quartet in October, 1922. Since that time it has made a transcontinental tour winning approbation wherever it played for its vitality and its brilliant interpretations.
PETRI QUARTET. Composed of Petri, Bolland, Unkenstein and Alwin Scliroeder, the latter afterwards becoming the cellist of the Kncisel Quartet. This quartet was founded while Henri Petri was professor of violin at the Dresden Conservatory and rivaled the Brodsky quartet in popularity.
PETROGRAD QUARTET. An organization founded by Charles Gregorovitch, a pupil of Baselcirskji, Wieniawski and Joachim. Due to the disturbed state of affairs in Russia it is difficult to secure accurate information as to the present status and personnel of musical organizations.
PRILL QUARTET. Composed of Carl Prill, August Siebert, Anton Rusitzka and Joseph Sulzer. At the time this quartet was founded (1897) there were a number of brilliant ensemble organizations in Vienna, but nevertheless the thorough musicianship of the members of this quartet has brought it conspicuously before the music loving public.
RASOUMOWSKY QUARTET. Founded at Vienna in 1808 by Andreas Rasoumowsky, a Russian nobleman, with Schuppanzigh, Weiss and Lincke, he himself playing second violin. The organization for many years met in the evenings and played Beethoven’s quartets with the master himself as instructor. Beethoven’s three quartets Op. 59 were dedicated to Rasoumowsky.
ROMAN QUARTET. Composed of Tito Monachesi, Vincenzo Desamtis, Romolo Jacobavi and Gaetano Morelli. It was organized in 1893 by imperial decrec under the supervision of the celebrated Italian composer Sgambati and has been the means of furthering the interests of chamber music in Italy.
ROSÉ QUARTET. Founded at Vienna in 1882 by Arnold Rosé with T. Fischer, Rusitska and Buxbaum. This quartet toured Europe several times and underwent several changes in its personnel. It is considered at the present time one of the finest organizations in Europe, due largely to the fact that Rosé himself is considered to be a born quartet leader.
ST. PETERSBURG QUARTET. This quartet is mentioned at some length in Leopold Auer’s brilliant account of his musical career (My Long Life in Music). It was composed of Leopold Auer, Jean Pickel, Weickmann and Charles Davidoff. It had the distinction of playing the chamber music written by Tschaikowsky, Arensky, Borodin, Cui and Rubinstein from the original manuscript and was also known as the Imperial Russian Quartet.
SCHUPPANZIGH QUARTET. An organization in which Ignaz Schuppanzigh, one of Beethoven’s closest friends, played the first violin, at the home of Prince Carl Licknowsky, who played second violin, Weiss the viola and Kraft the cello. This organization met every Friday during 1794-95, and developed a high degree of musicianship. Beethoven was present at many of its rehearsals and concerts.
